Bandy

Bandy's self-righteousness proved his own ruin. Instead of being a centenarian, he died at 99 years old, one year short. And his attempts to grow the church of the Third Revelation only resulted in the death of its false prophet Eli Sunday.

Bandy's sows nursed Eli, with the predictable bad results. Bandy's refusal to let God's emissary, Third Revelation Daniel Plainview, from extracting the wealth and making humanity better, fundamentally meant that Bandy made the wrong choice of siding with the wrong side.

Bandy's grandson William will similarly pay the price: he may have wanted to come to Hollywood to be in movies, but by the time he achieves penance it is too late, and the land has been drilled.

The dishonest H.W. interpreter

As H.W walks away with his interpreter from Daniel's house, the interpreter fails to do his job: as Daniel is speaking, the interpreter is not doing the sign language even though Daniel is shouting in the back. Even earlier, he had to be prodded by Daniel to translate what the latter had said ("You are an orphan! Ever hear that word? TELL HIM WHAT I SAID!").

How would sign language for this be? It would be interesting to see a video of the interpreter walking alongside H.W and signing "You are not my son, you are just a little piece of competition. Bastard from a basket, bastard from a basket, YOU'RE A BASTARD FROM A BASKET!!!"

The frequency of Daniel's drinks

Daniel drinks Eli's water every day, up. How often and how does he drink other drinks?
- Blood of lamb from Bandy's tract. Up or on the rocks?
- Eli's milkshake, up (how often?)
- Tilford's whisky, up (how often?)
- Whisky, up (how often?)

And for eating.
- Steak (how, and how often?)
- Quail.
- Potatoes.
- Eli (up, once).

Clarity and decisiveness amidst confusion

The folks at Signal Hill were confused and engaged in too much confusion. Daniel, kind as always, thanks them for their time (even though he, Daniel, himself spent more of his time, by traveling over half the state to be with them that night -- all the while being busy with his new well coming in at Coyote Hills and two others producing at Antelope), but realizes he doesn't need the lease amidst such confusion. And he also shows his restraint, by letting them know that he wouldn't take the lease even if they gave it to him as a gift -- because Daniel doesn't need it, so the gifts can be spared for those who do.

The folks at Signal Hill engaged in confusion when visited by the Third Revelation, they were not careful and lost it all when Daniel drilled further north. The right path was always to go with the family man, the one who did his own drilling, the real oil man -- but by not jumping at the opportunity, they blew it.

H. M. Tilford's need to shout

At the restaurant, Daniel had learned to communicate with H.W. with kind words and affectionate gestures, but H.M.Tilford felt the need to shout to be heard. And the shouting was futile since H.W wasn't looking at him. Like with everything else, the incident illustrates how Tilford looked like a fool.

Plainview: example father

Throughout the movie, it is clear that Daniel Plainview always does what is best for H.W. Be it giving him a respectable oilman name a la H.M.Tilford and J.J.Carter, be it pacifying him by putting whisky in his milk when H.W.'s father dies, be it bonding with H.W. over camping, hunting for quail, searching oil, be it keeping H.W. in the room when discussing serious business, teaching him about the business...Be it indirectly hooking him up with Mary Sunday, be it consoling him by singing to him when he first gets deaf, be it sending him to a school for the deaf in San Francisco, be it buying him a big, strong, expensive meal to put decent food inside of him -- Daniel Plainview is a model father to be emulated.

It is only natural that in the end he also, as a good father, needs to tell H.W. when he is wrong, a bastard from a basket in setting up competition against Plainview.

Redemption for the restaurant owner

At first, the nice restaurant owner gives preference to H. M. Tilford and crew, and serves them drinks out of order even though Plainview ordered his drinks first. While this in principle is despicable, the owner did redeem himself and told Daniel he'd have his steaks right out. And in the extras on the DVD, the restaurant even offers Plainview additional drinks to make up for their mistake.

And Daniel accepts the apology, in a similar way to how he accepts Abel Sunday's apology for not having bread earlier in the movie. Given that even good people like Peter engaged in the denial of Jesus, so did good people in the movie deny the truth in the Gospel of Plainview, the Third Revelation, the One Who the Lord Has Chosen.

Prayer for Daniel Plainview (Full Text)

Our Daniel Plainview who is the Third Revelation,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy mansion come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in the fields.
Give us this day our daily potatoes,
and forgive us our following song and dance and superstition,
as we forgive HWs who misstep,
and lead us not into false prophets,
but deliver us from Eli. Amen.

Daniel's kindness towards Bandy's grandson William

When Eli mentions that William Bandy is one of the finest members Eli has at the Church of the Third Revelation and that William wants to come to Hollywood to be in movies, and Eli says William is very good looking and Eli thinks William will have success, Daniel encourages it by saying "That's wonderful!"

J. J. Carter

J. J. Carter scratched around in the dirt but sold out to Standard. The obvious analogy here is that he sold his soul (oil) to the Devil (Standard). Daniel, however, never sold out. Compare Daniel's confidence of what is right with that of Gods in scriptures, in particular the sacrifices they all had to make for the greater good.

H.W.'s own company in Mexico

H.W. was clearly making a misstep. How would the competition between Daniel Plainview, the Third Revelation, and bastard-from-a-basket play out? Continue the script after Daniel has eaten Eli. (For the purposes of this question, assume that Daniel has already found H. M. Tilford in his house, wherever he was sleeping, and cut his throat).

Plainview God knows everything

He knew where H.W. had been. "...have what's his name tell me where you've been. OR DO YOU THINK I DON'T KNOW?"

When Eli comes by Plainview's house, Plainview asks him point-blank: "Are things DOWN for you right now Eli?" How could he have known?

When Eli says "I am in desperate times", Daniel sympathetically says "I know" and even states philosophically "The Lord sometimes challenges us doesn't he Eli?" In other words, he knows God's plans, so he must be God.

Apostle Peter and Eli Sunday

Just like Peter denied Christ 3 times, Eli was forced to deny God many times by Plainview.

The genius of Daniel Plainview

How come he is able to be so physically adept in the end despite drunk? He throws bowling balls at Eli, and crushes him with the bowling pin. Because he knows how to mix his drinks!

- whisky
- Tilford's whisky
- Eli's water (water is always good to temper excessive alcohol intake, helps with re-hidration)
- blood of lamb from Bandy's tract. Blood is alkaline, so neutralizes stomach acidity due to alcohol.
- Eli's milkshake. Now that is a perfect hangover cure!

Once again, the wisdom of Daniel Plainview is imparted for the ages...

Another instance of the kindness of Daniel Plainview

After explaining to Eli about how he (Daniel) drinks his (Eli's) water up everyday (as well as the blood of lamb from Bandy's tract), Daniel lets Eli sit down again. And gives him a nice, kind smile. Furthermore, he shows sympathy, even admitting to Eli that the Lord sometimes challenges us, repeating the line with him as Eli cries.

The funny thing about Plainview's breaking and beating of Eli

Quiz: what was it? He asked Eli to "Listen/Listen/Listen" 3 times.
A: Plainview paid Paul $10,000 cash in hand, just like that. [Paul] has his own company now, prosperous little business, three wells producing 5 thousand dollars a week. Meanwhile, Eli, the sniveling ass, just cried through his nonsense, being the afterbirth that slithered out on his mother's filth.

HW: boys don't cry, and neither do bastards?

HW does not cry as a boy or adult, only as a baby. Boys don't cry, and neither do bastards (or people lower than bastards), especially bastards from a basket. Discuss.

Whisky and goat's milk

How would you name this cocktail? Experiment with it and describe the taste and effects, including describing the whisky and the source of the goat's milk. Milkshakes ok. Extra credit if both, supplied with proper contrast.

Owen Meany and Daniel Plainview

Owen Meany deserved a prayer as an instrument of God, so so does Plainview, the Third Revelation who the Lord has chosen, the one who is not a false prophet, the one who ate Eli up and drank his water and his milkshake both up. Compose a prayer to pay homage to Plainview.

Tilford and Eli

Tilford only looks like a fool, whereas Eli *is* "just a fool".  Contrast why, by drawing on Tilford's business acumen versus Eli's song and dance.

Paul Sunday as the Prophet

Often forgotten is the important role of Paul Sunday as the Prophet announcing the coming of the Third Revelation, namely Daniel Plainview. Observe how Paul doesn't talk, he acts. He knew what was there in Little Boston, he found Daniel to take it out of the ground, got $10000 cash in hand, just like that, he has his own company now, prosperous little business 3 wells producing $5000/week. And Daniel came and brought wealth to the town.

Paul Sunday was the chosen brother. He is the Prophet. He is the smart one. Yin.

Eli Sunday was the afterbirth. That slithered out on his mother's filth. Just a fool. Yang.

Seepage vs Drainage

Seepage comes easy and is not valuable.

Drainage is hard and gets at the bottom of things.

Drainage is valuable, seepage is for the lazy ones.

If you want to succeed in life, don't take the easy seepage route. Go for drainage! And be as successful as Daniel Plainview. Do make sure to bring a straw that reaches across the room (i.e. get the right tools), otherwise you won't be able to drink milkshakes, i.e. bear the fruit of your efforts (such as the strawberry and banana on the milkshake).

Eli Sunday and Joe Gundha

Joe Gundha's tragedy could have been avoided if only Eli Sunday had spent more time with him, and/or had properly blessed the well. What alternative paths could have taken place? Presumably, God had a destiny for everyone, and it was Gundha's to die the way he did. Presumably, he went to heaven for being a man of considerable faith; that being said, it is unlikely he would have made the journey if it hadn't been for the Third Revelation (Daniel Plainview) taking charge, asking his crew to clean him up, put some clothes on him, and set up a tent -- and setting up his burial for noon the next day.

Joe Gundha helped illustrate the kindness in Daniel Plainview, and also helped Eli exercise some of his calling duty by presiding over the funeral and ensuring that Joe's possessions made their way back to his family.

Discuss: why doesn't Eli's supposedly good acts here absolve him from being the afterbirth?

What is behind the locked doors in Daniel's bowling alley?

The answer is undoubtedly, heaven. Eli tries to make it but can't as he doesn't deserve it. And Plainview is the keeper at the gates of dawn. It is also not for us mere mortals to yet know what is on the other side. Eli is the one who preaches salvation but can't get it, since Plainview is the third revelation.

An interesting twist is, why are there two doors? Two doors to heaven? Yes, because there is always an alternative path, but all paths require unlocking. Without the key, neither path is available, and in the case of Eli, he dies at the door. Kinda like dying on the beach. And song and dance and superstition don't help here.

Daniel's diet at the end of the movie

Strictly speaking, when the movie ends Daniel is not yet finished as Eli is still there, and Daniel planned to eat him up. It is clear that Daniel has gained weight, so now his stomach has added space for the large meal that would be Eli Sunday. Presumably, like large Burmese pythons or saltwater crocodiles, Plainview can eat large meals in one sitting.

Research the nutrition characteristics for Plainview of eating Eli. How long would he need before the following meal? And of Daniel's drinks, which would complement this meal best? (Hint: he also drinks Eli's milkshake, so in addition to eating Eli, Daniel is also going to extract whatever milk-like substance is inside Eli, shake it, and drink it).

And in the end, Daniel will bury Eli underground, though at that point it will be the bones and other indigestible pieces of Eli that Daniel defecates post-meal. This way, some of the nutrients can be recycled back to nature, presumably into new reservoirs of oil, which Daniel can (in a sequel) drill via either seepage or drainage.

The importance of starting small

When Daniel Plainview first pitches the folks at Signal Hill, he describes how his wells are giving him an income of $5000 a week. "I couldn't come here sooner because my new well was coming in at Coyote Hills and I had to see about it. That well is now flowing at two thousand barrels and it's paying me an income of five thousand dollars a week. I have two others drilling and I have sixteen producing at Antelope. " And in the end, it is revealed that Paul Sunday, with the initial $10000 cash in hand from Plainview, also has his own company, a prosperous little business, three wells producing five thousand dollars a week. And given inflation since this is past 1927, this number is much lower than Daniel's income in 1911 -- not to mention, it is unclear if $5000 a week includes the Antelope production.

But one must not forget that Plainview started with just a few hundred dollars of silver mining. So he started really small.

A penny saved is a penny earned.

Meanwhile, how much was Eli Sunday able to get with his song and dance? Discuss.

Plainview's dieting advice to Al

When Al suggests that Daniel build the pipeline around the Bandy tract, Plainview says "don't be thick in front of me Al!". Given that Al is overweight, discuss the double-meaning of going around Tehachapi mountains and Daniel's follow-up of going around Al to negotiate the Bandy tract deal. As in, Al is fat, but not as fat as the mountains -- or at least, Daniel makes sure that Al doesn't get too thick first, and goes around Al first. Discuss.

A movie with a happy ending

The ending is by all practical purposes, a happy one. Daniel lives in a big and luxurious house that he deserved given all his hard work and prosperity he brought to the places where he drilled. When so many people suffer from insomnia, Daniel can sleep anywhere. Despite his wealth, he will occasionally use more modest clothes, and he doesn't leave spare food (or for that matter, spare booze -- his accidental breaking of the champagne glass at the end notwithstanding). Finally, while the movie doesn't show it, he also has a succulent meal in Eli Sunday at the end, who Daniel said he was going to eat. No wastage there!

This happy ending may be the 4th revelation, the 3rd being Daniel Plainview.

The meaning of H.W.

Yahweh? or George Bush senior? H.W. is the son of oil, and what are Bush 41st's initials? Bingo! Father/son roles reversed. Discuss.

Religious analogies

Both the baptism of oil and the bastard from a basket themes are analogies to elements from religions. Which religions and which stories are these? What lessons can be drawn by contrasting the actions of Daniel Plainview (aka the Third Revelation) with those of Lord Krishna or Jesus?

Milkshake recipes

Milkshakes are tasty, filling and sweet, therefore likely to appeal to infants, their drawback being the time it takes to prepare and the availability of ingredients. As a research project, discuss the advantages of milkshakes made from the 3 different animals: cows, goats and sows (pigs). What would happen if whisky is added to the milkshakes for added flavor? Is it better to feed the infants with milkshakes, or feed them milk and reserve milkshakes for parties and special occasions? Give compelling reasons for your arguments.

Extra credit: how about milkshakes made from horses or elephants?

The effects of various kinds of milk and drinks on child and adult nutrition

As There Will Be Blood shows, how a baby is weaned has huge effects on how the baby turns out. Paul Sunday was nursed by Mother Sunday's breast milk and became a prophet, a smart and successful prospector who with an initial cash of $500-$10000 dollars was able to build his own company: a prosperous little business, three wells producing five thousand dollars a week. Similarly, HW Plainview was raised on goat's milk and occasional whisky, and eventually learned the tricks of the trade and married a beautiful woman and set up his own company in Mexico. Meanwhile, Eli Sunday slithered out on his mother's filth, and hence was treated as an afterbirth by his family, with his parents considering putting him in a glass jar in a mantelpiece. While Paul was suckling at his mother's teat, it was up to Bandy's sows to nurse Eli. Eli eventually becomes a weak preacher, who naively thought his song and dance would help him -- whereas the smart Paul Sunday found Daniel to take the oil out of the ground. Eli's fate wasn't helped by the fact that his milkshakes were drunk by Daniel who had a straw that reached across the room.

Questions for understanding of the plot, with concomitant implications for child and adult nutrition.

1) Daniel Plainview ate steak, but what did he drink to complement his healthy meals? List 5 drinks. (A: whisky, Tilford's whisky, Eli's water, blood of lamb from Bandy's tract, and Eli's milkshake).

2) Contrast goat's milk, regular milk and sow milk when it comes to child nutrition.

3) What is the humane way to deal with afterbirths?

The kindness of Daniel Plainview

Let's start this post from the beginning by discussing a scene from the end: Plainview's kindness towards Eli Sunday.

1) He thanks Eli right after the negotiation with Abel for buying the Sunday ranch.
2) He thanks Eli before the baptism for agreeing to wash Daniel's sins away with the blood of lamb.
3) He politely declines and thanks Eli in the end for offering him a drink.
4) He tells Eli how genuinely sorry he is at Eli's plight at the end of the movie. "I am so sorry!".
5) And finally, he also gives Eli free lessons on oil drainage. In other words, he reveals the truth to Eli, since Daniel is the Third Revelation.

So, all in all, Daniel Plainview isn't all bad, he is a kind messenger of truth.
